A Hijabi's Guide to styling in Malaysian Heat

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

In Malaysia, it is summer all year long. When the temperatures rise through the roof and the humidity becomes unbearable, it is hard for women to dress modestly. It makes you want to wear nothing but just your underwear. Regardless, Muslim women still need to cover up for religious conviction and devotion to God. With that, I’m here to prove that you can dress how you want to, and not die of heat exhaustion. I have learned a few key tips over the years, so here I put some of my personal guide, resources, and inspiration in trying to stay cool when you cannot shed all your layers (even though, we all know you want to.)

1. Light layering is number one

It is never easy dressing modestly at the best of times, let alone in the peak of a heatwave. A huge no when it comes to dressing modestly in the heat is, wearing thick layers. Try avoiding short sleeves or sleeveless dresses and tops, as that would require layers, but being such a sucker for layering, I will still try to layer now and then. However, I will layer with much thinner and lighter materials as this can still keep you cool, and it is a lot more breathable. If layering is not your forte, long-sleeve T-shirts or blouses are the way to go, as they do not require you having to layer clothes, and they are super versatile.

2. Maxi skirts are key

Wearing maxi skirts and dresses is similar to wearing nothing underneath at all, but all your bits are covered. They are airy, fun, and can basically be worn for nearly every style. You can get them in patterns, denim, bright colours, or your favourite colour. Hana Tajima collection in Uniqlo always has great summer skirts and dresses that catches my eye every year. Back to the first tip, light layering, if you happened to buy a sleeveless dresses, do not worry, find a nice light cardigan or a kimono cardigan to cover up. You can find kimono cardigan all over the malls as they are in style, right now. You can also wear an undershirt or half-tee underneath.

3. Loose trousers save your outfit

If you do not like skirts or your style are not super feminine yet you want that airy feel, wide-leg denim jeans and palazzo pants are your friend. You would think denim would be too warm for this weather, but with it being wide-leg, it still allows air to flow through keeping you cool. It is a super-easy and cool outfit combo when paired with a long-sleeve tee or tank and a light jacket. Loose pants always seem to add an extra something to a look that makes it seem like you spent more time on your outfit than you actually did.

4. Stick with light colors and materials

Focus on light fabric and colors. They are a must. For example, a polyester shirt may look nice and breezy, but I’m personally more comfortable in something like a cotton T-shirt. I find that more natural fabrics breathe better. Moreover, light colors reflect heat from the sun and therefore keeps you feeling cool when it is hot outside. Personal tip: stock up on chiffon or cotton hijabs in black and nude color because they are lightweight material and the colors just match everything.
