Environmentally Friendly Concrete

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

Good news came from the world of science has found a way to utilize coal waste into useful products and even environmentally friendly.

Nowadays, Malaysia has experienced a problem of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) due to increasing population and urbanization growth. To reduce this pressure of MSW, Municipal solid waste incinerator is the solution. Nevertheless, by product of the incinerator were fly and bottom ash, a highly pollutant waste compounds that is harmful to the environment, which are combined for disposal to landfill.

Scientists at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UMP) are developing methods for producing concrete without cement, using bottom ash. Re-purposing this form of waste keeps the environment clean from air pollutants and minimize disposal waste in landfill. By collecting bottom ash directly from MSW and then mixing them partial/replacing Portland cement, this highly pollutant residue becomes a valuable resource instead.

The final product is as strong as traditional concrete, it is fire resistance and thermal insulation. More resilient to damaging effects and stable for residential or commercial buildings in cases of exposure to extreme heat. Now, not only the waste can be used without damaging the environment, cheap and easy to process, it is also an environmentally friendly product.
