Even though college can feel quite overwhelming for many students, with the new lifestyle changes, moving out of home, new friends, and of course a lot of studying and hard work. Sport and exercise can be easily neglected. Sport deserves as much as attention as any other academic subject. However, in today’s day and age, youngsters are spending more time glued to television screens, their smartphones and rooted to their classroom desks. It is important that students find ways to stay active and exercise during their college years too. Lucky for us in Universiti Selangor (UNISEL) Bestari Jaya campus, we have our Kompleks Sukan, that officially opened on July 15, 2019.
Among the facilities available are gymnasiums, badminton courts, futsal courts, basketball courts, takraw courts, rugby fields, football fields, track running and even a dance room. On the opening of Kompleks Sukan, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohammad Redzuan Othman, UNISEL President and Vice Chancellor hope it can benefit the entire university community. “All parties should take full advantage of this sports facility and that every facility shall be kept in good condition” he said.
While academic grades are imperative for job applications and career success, many employers are also looking for well-rounded candidates with demonstrated participation in extra-curricular activities. In Kompleks Sukan there are varieties of sports club that you can choose from, which are the Marlins and Predators rugby club, badminton club, taekwondo club, Panther hockey club, net ball club, Pencak Silat club and even eSports club. The sports club also have trained lecturers and coaches in coaching and mentoring skills that enable them to trained the athletes by analysing their
performances, instructing in relevant skills, providing encouragement and effectively develop the students to their full potential.
By joining sports club, not only it improves one’s physical health. It can also give a sense of fulfilment to the students, while developing competencies such as improved communication and leadership skills, increased responsibility and self-management, and better teamwork skills that can be applied within the college and beyond. Sports clubs also help young adults build lasting friendships and make them feel part of a wider community.
Recently, the students of Interpersonal Communication class from Faculty Communication Visual Art and Computing (FCVAC) held a three-day table tennis match in January 21 to January 23, 2020. “By having this event it is a great way to kick off a table tennis club in UNISEL” said Syed Azamudden, one of the students that organized the event. With that saidUNISEL give the freedom to students to create just about any sports club or sports event that the students keen on, in Kompleks Sukan. Hence, these students can further develop their leadership skills, stimulate creativity, and problem solving skills by organising sports events and creating a new club.
